Abstract: |
An archaeological and historical evaluation was undertaken prior to the construction of low-cost housing and associated car parking on land at Foundry Square, Hayle. The area affected by the proposal was until 1903 part of Harvey's Foundry, the oldest, largest and most important engineering works in Cornwall. Although relatively few structures were revealed by the trenches, the site investigation proved to be of great value in confirming the history of this part of the foundry site. The map and documentary evidence collected prior to the excavation was shown to be correct in its essential detail, and there were no "hidden" phases or structures beneath the known and documented buildings.
