Abstract: |
A programme of archaeological works was undertaken as part of the contract for Archaeological Services in Relation to the Protection of Wrecks Act (1979). The site was believed to represent the wreck of the St Anthony, an early 16th century Portuguese armed merchant carrack, lost as a result of bad weather in 1527 whist on passage between Lisbon and Antwerp. The exact position of the site was still currently unknown, other than its general location. No archaeological remains were observed by the ADU in previous inspections of the study area. No immediate threats to the site were observed during fieldwork, although it should be noted that the seabed was not inspected within the designated area. [AIP] |
