Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at a proposed development site which lay within a designated area of High Archaeological Potential. Investigations nearby had indicated a high level of medieval activity along the High Street frontage in Egham, and the surrounding area was well known for prehistoric activity, including Neolithic and Bronze Age sites. During the evaluation, features associated with the 16th-19th century occupation of the site were revealed, cutting into a deposit of disturbed or re-deposited natural brickearth. These included garden features, wells and refuse pits. A line of large post-holes ran parallel to the existing site boundary. On removal of the brickearth deposit, pits and possible ditches, apparently of Late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age date, were revealed. Residual Mesolithic or Neolithic flints were recovered from one of these features. No evidence of extensive medieval remains was found, and only a small amount of residual material of this date was recovered, suggesting that medieval occupation of this area had been fairly limited. It was recommended that a detailed watching brief, possibly involving participation in the excavation of foundations, should be carried out during development. [AIP]
