Abstract:
The impact assessment identified three areas of potential archaeological activity. Evidence of Roman kilns had been found to the north, west, and south-west of the site. Several concentrations of Roman activity had been discovered c.1.1km to the south of the Rover Works. An important Iron Age settlement, possibly with Bronze Age origins, was also discovered at that site. A Roman way, the road from Alchester to Dorchester, ran north-south through the eastern half of the Rover Works. The study area had produced a number of possibly Roman inhumation burials over the last 100 years. Although none were well documented or securely located, they were clearly associated with the line of the Roman Road. Evidence of activity had been revealed on the Rover Site including a Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age ditch, medieval ploughsoil, post-medieval ditches, Roman and medieval ploughsoil and Roman burials.
