Abstract: |
Archaeological assessment on land formerly open heath but enclosed since around 1800, indicated the possibility of significant prehistoric activity in the area, and the high likelihood of Roman material/occupation evidence, although nothing was currently recorded within the development site. The topography of the site - a wide shallow valley - suggested the existence of colluvial deposits towards the centre of the site, perhaps masking any early finds or even below-ground features. The possible archaeological potential of the site was assessed, the way in which the character and extent of any potential evidence might be more effectively determined was considered, and methods of targeting any archaeological sites set out.
