Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site within the Roman and medieval town of Staines identified that a great deal of archaeological evidence had been recorded in the surrounding area. Features included a Neolithic pit with associated pottery, Roman ditches, and a medieval ditch and pits. At one site, Neolithic flints, Roman builidings and ditches, early medieval ditches, medieval pits and a post-medieval kiln had been recorded within the same excavated area. It was concluded that the site had a high archaeological potential, but it was noted that parts of it were covered by buildings, the construction of which could have destroyed any archaeological deposits which may have been present. However, other parts were less likely to have been disturbed. It was recommended that trial trenching should be carried out. [AIP] |
