Abstract:
The evaluation comprised of 13 trenches and a watching brief and revealed alluvial sequences associated with Frog Brook spanning the 19th and 20th century. The alluvial material represented a period in which the Frog Brook changed from a flowing river to a more slow-moving or stagnant watercourse. This may have dated from the historical diversion of the brook during the 13th century. In the later medieval and post-medieval period the area had been prone to flooding. Whilst 19th century domestic remains correlated with the 19th century editions of the OD maps of the area, the artefactual assemblage reflected occupation of the houses up to the mid-20th century, prior to demolition. Industrial deposits consisted of material pertaining to two factories. Trench 1 was on the location of the Vulcan Ironworks factory and excavation of trench 10 provided enough stratigraphic and artefactual information to assume that this location was previously a component of the Grainger porcelain factory. All trenches displayed evidence of demolition, levelling and present day use. [Au(abr)]
