Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development, which lay within an Archaeological Priority Zone, identified that a range of prehistoric artefacts had been recorded within a 500m radius of the site. Finds included Mesolithic objects, Neolithic axes, a Neolithic scraper, Bronze Age pottery, three sherds of Iron Age pottery and several flint flakes and tools of uncertain date. No findspots of later material had been recorded in the area, and the site itself was known to have remained undeveloped until shortly after 1956, when a school was constructed and associated terracing was carried out. It was concluded that, although the site had once had a good potential for prehistoric remains, any archaeological deposits were likely to have been truncated. A limited evaluation of areas outside the footprint of the existing buildings was recommended. [AIP] |
