Abstract: |
An evaluation was undertaken on land proposed for development just to the east of Bolingbroke Castle. The topsoil on the site was unusually deep and the history of land use on this plot as a vegetable garden, certainly in the 20th century if not longer, suggests that the plot may have been double-dug. There was no indication of any structural remains in the form of building debris in the trench. The handful of pottery sherds found were in keeping with use of the land for cultivation. The eastern end of the plot was not investigated and a building shown on two maps may have survived, unless it was of mud and stud construction, in which case little would have survived below ground.
