Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken on land at Wilby Way, Wellingborough. The study area contained well preserved Middle to Late Iron Age settlement remains. These were considered to be of national importance and a core area was protected by a section 106 legal agreement. A desk-based assessment, combined with geophysical survey, illustrated that the archaeological deposits were both denser and more extensive than previously thought. Twelve trial trenches were opened up in order that the archaeological implications of development outside of the area protected by the Section 106 legal agreement could be assessed. This confirmed the presence of Middle to Late Iron Age occupation, extending into areas of proposed development. These deposits were truncated by ploughing activity and survived to a shallow depth. An archaeological mitigation strategy was required in these areas, defining zones for preservation, excavation and/or watching briefs. [Au(abr)] |
