Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during part of the land reclamation scheme across Newton Moor, part of the South Frances Mine. Work involved in the land reclamation scheme included the fitting of a surface grille across the Daubuz open shaft, the hedging of a second open shaft, remodelling of the ground contours in order to prevent flooding, footpath grading, routing and surfacing. In addition the coverdown of an area affected by the dumping of Blue Billy (gasworks waste containing cyanide, and the construction of a lintelled bridge. During the fitting of the grille across the Daubuz open shaft a number of archaeological features (headgear/skip road timber supports) were observed and sketch survey and a record made of the layout and features of the shaft. No significant archaeological finds were encountered during the capping of the second open shaft, during the work done for the drainage scheme, the footpath and bridge construction or the coverdown of gaswork waste.
