Abstract: |
In 1995 permission was applied for to undertake works within the cellar of 42 High Street in order to bring the room into use. At the same time it was intended to carry out repairs to the attic floor, the central tiebeam of which had failed at its western end. It was impossible to study the entire structure, but that which was seen appeared to date from the late 17th century, or more likely, the first half of the 18th century. This must have been a rebuilding as the oldest part of the structure, the cellar, was earlier; and a late 16th century or early 17th century continuous jettied range within number 42a High Street escaped reconstruction. The cellar extended from number 42 beneath part of 42a as well. Modernization was undertaken in the early 19th century and further work was also carried out in that century as well as in the 20th.
