Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of three houses was undertaken. An inspection established that substantial earthwork remains associated with a Mobilisation Centre or Fort, erected in 1890 as part of a London Defence scheme, existed at the site. The earthworks corresponded to a survey carried out in 1997, which showed the 19th century rampart and (now roofed-over) ditch, along with banks under which magazine chambers had originally been built into the reverse face of the ditch. Alterations to the site had been made in the 1930s and the 1980s. In the surrounding area, Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic implements, an Iron Age coin, a Roman coin and evidence of medieval occupation had been recorded. The site of a clay pipe kiln lay to the west. A large number of archaeological sites within the historic town centre of Guildford had also been recorded. The underground chambers at the proposal site were not to be substantially altered by the development, and it was noted that a detailed survey had already been carried out. It was recommended that a watching brief should be maintained during disturbance, so that any unexpected details could be recorded. [AIP]
