Abstract:
An investigation was carried out in advance of development at Trafford Old Hall, a building which had been demolished during the 1930s. No development had taken place at the site since the demise of the Hall, indicating a good potential for the survival of archaeological deposits. The outline of the central sandstone core of the medieval hall was exposed and recorded, and limited excavation was undertaken. Little evidence was found to establish what activity had occurred on the site, if any, prior to construction of the building. In its earliest form, the hall appeared to have been a simple rectangular building divided in half by a structural wall, and further divided into quarters. The building had been shortened when the western and eastern ends had been remodelled in brick in the 16th/17th century. The variable forms and styles of structures which had been added to the hall suggested a gradual accumulation of new spaces, rather than a formal redesign. A transition in English houses from a central hearth within an open hall to an arrangement of chimneys and smokehoods against walls was well attested in the archaeological and historical record. This process was represented at Trafford Old Hall by the displacement of a central pitched stone hearth by a sequence of brick chimneys in the western half of the house. The replacement of a possible central hearth by a timber floor was represented by the scorching of clay floor surfaces which had been cut by beam slots. A pit containing 14th-17th century pottery and cess-like material was also recorded within the area of the house. External features included parts of two outbuildings, drains and a cobbled driveway.
