Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that it lay just outside the medieval core of Reigate. It was situated c. 30m from Reigate Town Hall, a Grade II Listed Building dating from 1901 which had been built over or close to the outer defences of Reigate Castle, a SAM. The proximity of the proposal site to the castle suggested that it may have been used in the medieval period. Documentary evidence seemed to indicate that the proposal area had not been built on until after 1920, and that it had remained a field until that time. It was noted that it was extremely unusual for this type of open area, adjacent to a medieval town, to remain untouched for so long. The creation of an estate in the 18th century seemed to have blocked urban expansion to the east of the castle, but extra-mural activity could nonetheless have occurred in the medieval period, and it was possible that the outer moat of the castle may have crossed the western edge of the site.
