Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out during topsoil stripping in advance of an opencast coal mine and building development. Desk-based assessment had identified that a footpath which crossed the extreme eastern end of the site had first appeared on a map of 1837, but may have had earlier origins. Although the site lay within an area of known long term occupation, only one identified site in the vicinity had pre-dated the medieval period. This lack of early sites was likely to have been due to a bias of modern recovery conditions, as the majority of investigations in the area had concentrated on standing buildigs or industrial remains. During the watching brief, the only cut features identified were modern field drains, and only post-medieval material was recovered, with the exception of a single sherd of mid-14th to 16th century pottery. The footpath identified in the desk-based study was not affected by the soil stripping. [AIP]
