Abstract: |
Three trial pits were excavated in February and March 1995 adjacent to the river wall at Aylesford Friary. A fourth pit was excavated by the friars and work was monitored. The results confirmed the findings of similar test pitting in 1994. The modern river wall stood on an earlier structure, but there had been considerable dumping which had raised the level of the ground during and since the 1950s. No deposits of archaeological significance survived within the first two metres below the existing ground level in the area adjacent to the wall. [Au] |
