Abstract: |
During the course of the desk-based assessment a number of sites were identified as being within the immediate vicinity of the proposed development. The Castle Mill(s), were known to have originated in the 13th century. The mill and its associated structures occupied an area at the west side of the site until 1865, when the present gate house lodge was built on the same site. Remains that were likely to have survived were the mill's basements, wheel pits, channels, culverts, sluices. The site was therefore of considerable historic importance. The General Infirmary, a Grade II Listed Building built in the early 1780s had also survived. However, much of the structure and earlier alterations were encased in 20th century extensions.
