Abstract: |
Planning permission was to be sought for the redevelopment of the site for residential and commercial use. The assessment indicated that the site lay within an area of high archaeological activity, and this was reflected in the designation of the general areas as an 'area of archaeological importance' within the Borough. The area around the river Ravensbourne was highlighted as being of particular interest, yielding finds of various periods. Indeed, riversides were generally thought to be favourable spots for prehistoric and later occupation. The presence of alluvium close to rivers was also a significant factor for the survival of earlier archaeological deposits. The rear (southern) part of the site was formed by the former course of the river Ravensbourne. Archaeological remains and finds from Deptford dated from prehistoric to post-medieval periods. The presence of the Roman road (Watling Street) somewhere in the vicinity and probably along the line of Blackheath Road, led to the possibility of the presence of Roman roadside occupation. The focus of later medieval to post-medieval Deptford clearly lay just to the north-west of the site, as was evidenced by the predominance of structures dating to this period and by the results of recent fieldwork, such as that to the rear of the Magistrates Court, across Blackheath Road from the proposal site. Fieldwork here had located pottery wasters from the local industry and further production centres could have been nearby. This focus was further confirmed by the cartographic evidence; Roque's map of 1762 highlighted a development settlement around this area. Several entries were located near or within the development area, and were extremely significant when assessing archaeological potential. However, there was evidence for the presence of a basement on the site and further basements could have been present on the other, now demolished buildings fronting Blackheath Road. If this basementing was extensive and deep then this could have severely truncated the relevant archaeological levels in these locations, although no evidence had been recovered to suggest that the whole of the site had seen extensive truncation, for example as would be expected for gravel extraction. It was recommended that the impact of development on below-ground archaeological deposits at this site should be assessed by means of field evaluation. [Au(adp)] |
