Abstract: |
Excavations and documentary research were undertaken ahead of the conversion of barns at Pengersick Farm, a Scheduled Ancient Monument and Listed Building. The site of the farm stood on and comprised the surviving remains of a medieval fortification. Though only a short period of time was spent on site, a lot of information was gained about the nature of the late medieval castle. Light was shed in the form of the entrance to the Western Courtyard (apparently the main approach in the 15th century), with its fortified gate tower, and decorative flagstone threshold into a paved court. The Keep, Gate Tower, and Curtain Walls, were important survivors of a much neglected, but very important fortification of the 15th and early 16th centuries, one especially designed for defence by early artillery and well suited to respond to the style of the warfare prevalent at that period. It was, as far as could be determined, a unique building for Cornwall. [Au] |
