Abstract:
The desk-based assessment identified no known archaeology within the area of proposed development. Uniform earthworks were identified in the north-eastern part of the site during the site visit, these resembled medieval ridge and furrow earthworks but were more likely to be more recent attempts to drain this part of the site into a natural channel in the centre of the site. The assessment found an uncertain potential for the site to contain archaeology dating to the prehistoric, Roman and early medieval periods. There was an uncertain but possibly high potential for archaeology from the later-medieval period, in the form of the possible below ground remains of a chapel believed to be located close to the bridge across the Kingsbridge Brook immediately outside the are area of proposed development. In the later medieval period there was documentary evidence for a small settlement called Fries in the vicinity. This report was unable to establish the exact location this settlement and was unable to rule out the possibility that it was located, or extended into, the area of proposed development. The potential for the post-medieval period was low. Remains of all periods, present within the area of proposed development, would have benefited from the suspected lack of use of the plough ion this area and the location of the site on Alluvium. In the absence of detailed development plans, it was not possible to assess the implications of the proposed development upon any archaeology that may be present. [Au(abr)]
