Abstract: |
Fieldwalking was undertaken in advance of the excavation of a balancing pond. A number of cropmarks and soilmarks had been recorded in the surrounding area, including three soilmarks representing possible sunken featured buildings, which lay within an enclosure of possible prehistoric date. An Iron Age occupation site lay to the north of the study area, and Bronze Age occupation had been identified to the south-west. The site lay within the estate of Beaulieu, which had been constructed by Henry VIII in 1518. During the fieldwalking exercise, four worked flints, sixteen burnt flints and two fragments of post-medieval tile were recovered. The mode of flint flake production utilised appeared consistent with a Late Neolithic/Bronze Age date. It was concluded that the flints were likely to have represented peripheral activity associated with the nearby Bronze Age occupation site. [AIP] |
