Abstract: |
Ten evaluation trenches were excavated in advance of a housing development. The course of the Roman road linking Canterbury and Ashford, runs along the east side of the development. The site contained considerable amounts of redeposited clay. Two important archaeological features were located. One consisted of a cut (possibly a clay quarry or pond), which was sampled and contained four fills. The primary deposit contained 40 pottery fragments dating to 1150-1200 AD. Cutting the upper fill of this cut was the second feature which was rectangular in shape and contained a series of greensand blocks and occasional patches of gravel. This possibly functioned as a simple foundation. [AIP] |
