Abstract:
The assessment revealed that the proposed pipeine would not affect any areas of known national importance. It would pass through three sites of regional importance, namely a north-south aligned Roman road and two areas of identified Ancient Woodland. It would pass immediately south of a site of regional importance and although the site would not be impacted, it was possible that associated features could lay in the path of the route of the proposed pipeline and its working width. In addition, the proposed development would have a direct impact on three sites of lesser importance: the site of probable quarrying, and two possible ancient woodlands. It would have an uncertain impact upon one site, the site of a 'pond' shown on the OS plan of 1871. 31 sites of unconfirmed potential were identified; six of these were cropmarks of possible archaeological features visible on air photographs and one was the earthwork of a dry stream or hollow way. The remaining 24 were existing historical roads shown on the OS 1st edition 1" Plan of 1816. The origin and date of these roads was uncertain. [Au(adp)]
