Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a hotel identified that no prehistoric finds had been recorded in the immediate vicinity, but that a Neolithic/Bronze Age flint knife or scraper had been recovered and a section of Iron Age ditch had been recorded in the surrounding area. Roman settlement at Chesterfield had been concentrated at a fort on Ryknield Street, parts of which had been excavated. This Roman Road had been identified to the north and south of the town, but its route through Chesterfield remained undefined. Possible traces had been identified in 1932 which suggested that its route may have roughly followed that of Lordsmill Street. Two late Roman coins had been found in the vicinity of the site, indicating civilian occupation long after the fort itself had been abandoned. Lordsmill Street had been of importance through the medieval and into the post-medieval period, forming the main route from Chesterfield to Derby. Cartographic evidence depicted housing in the area in 1637, and some buildings were clearly present within the northern part of the study area on the tithe map of 1849. Minor fluctuations had occurred within the built environment until the site had finally been cleared in the 1970s. It was noted that 19th century buildings, railways and subsequent road-building activities could have caused considerable disturbance to the site, but potential existed for buried remains to have survived within the eastern and southern parts of the study area.
