Abstract: |
A watching brief on Phase 1 of gravel extraction identified four areas of interest. The first produced large quantities of finds and the mainly unabraded condition of the pottery suggests an associated building. Two possible sites for this are suggested by a shingle floor, associated post holes/impressions and the convergence of two ditches. Two areas produced quantities of unstratified pottery of mainly medieval and post-medieval date, and with their associated deposits and positions are interpreted as either a dwelling or a small agricultural area; and a building associated with a sheepfold or a settlement associated with an ancient track. The final area produced fragments of waterlogged human-worked wood, showing activity in the inter-tidal zone possibly predating the 8th-10th century formation of the shingle ridge. [AIP] |
