Abstract: |
A desk-based survey was undertaken on the implications of development at the site. An inn has been on site since at least 1768, below which are the superb remains of a 14th century stone undercroft divided into four bays. The lane had to be constructed prior to this and possibly dates to the 10th century , and a prestigious timber framed building of late 12th/early 13th century date probably stood above the vault. The potential for Roman evidence was quite high following the observation of Roman walling less than 20 metres away. [AIP] |
