Abstract:
A rapid desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of proposed developments. The OS map of 1849 showed an 'old engine house' associated with an 'old coal pit'. No name for the colliery was found, but in 1919 the land was part of Porter's Farm. The location of the proposed development some c.13-33m from the western plot boundary, meant that there was reason to believe that no structures relating to this colliery, or at least none of importance, would be encountered during developments. Neither the tithe map nor any other map sources showed any further pithead buildings. Three test boreholes for the colliery were sunk in September 1832 to March 1833, for John Lord of Ince. Lord was still the landowner at the time of the tithe apportionment in 1842. It was very likely that the colliery was disused by October 1838, when the North Union Railway from Wigan to Preston opened, with a halt at Coppull c.650m Northeast of the colliery site. A number of adjacent collieries, in use c.1850-1932 seemed to have had workings within 150-200m of the proposed development. Without Abandonment Plans, little could be said about the extent of these workings, which were not well documented in the local archives. [Au(abr)]
