Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken of the proposed upgrade of the A338 between Saltash and Callington over Viverdon Down, a rounded hill lying in the north-eastern part of St Mellion parish. In prehistory Viverdon Dwn appeared to have been part of a significant ritual area with Neolithic sites in the surrounding area including a henge monument, a long barrow and a stone axe source. Within the study area a number of barrows and possible sites of barrows of Bronze Age date, and Neolithic and Bronze Age flint scatters were also known. Traces of medieval activity included trackways, a field system of possible medieval origin, medieval cross shaft and base and a possible cross site. It was shown that Viverdon Down remained unenclosed downland until the late 19th century, with the process of enclosure being completed early this century. [Au(adp)] |
