Abstract:
Magnetic scanning found the general background magnetic levels to be low across the majority of the site. Two main areas of interest were identified; the south-eastern half of the scanned area and a narrow band adjacent to the western boundary. Elsewhere, isolated anomalies may also have had some significance but were not investigated by detailed survey. The detailed magnetic survey results corresponded well with the cropmark evidence and revealed a dense concentration of anomalies forming two groups of enclosures. One enclosure was formed by a large rectilinear enclosure with a smaller annexe attached to form an approximate 'L" shape. This contained substantial internal activity, comprising further rectangular enclosures, several ring ditches and numerous pit type anomalies, although some of these may have related to quarry activity. The other group comprised several less regular, abutting enclosures and the internal landscape was notable for the quiet background and absence of any type of anomalies apart from a single, clearly defined ring ditch. A portion of the archaeological deposits forming this group had been obliterated by an area of quarrying and it was possible some of the other anomalies had been damaged by ploughing. Several parallel ditches traversing the survey area, close to the western edge, were likely to correspond to a trackway. Elsewhere other archaeological type responses were noted, however, they did not form any coherent patterns therefore a conclusive interpretation could not be formed. Two areas of resistance survey were carried out over strong magnetic anomalies which would be expected to give comparable results, however, Area 1 contained no convincing archaeological type responses while Area 2 clearly defined the enclosures and quarrying noted in the magnetic data. As no additional information had been revealed and given the variable results between the two areas, it was unlikely further resistance survey would contribute significantly to the understanding of this site.
