Abstract:
An evaluation excavation took place on a plot close to the River Yare within the former grounds of Thorpe Hall. The hall was an early 17th century house, occupying the site of the manor house and palace of the medieval Bishops of Norwich within the manor of Thorpe. The medieval chapel survived until modern times. A single trench revealed modern gravel surfacing and topsoil over an extensive layer of gravel and chalk make-up. This overlay a succession of alluvial (and colluvial) deposits, which probably formed until the later 18th century or later, when the make-up appeared to have been lain down. [Au(abr)]
