Abstract: |
<summary>A watching brief was undertaken on groundworks associated with the construction of a service station. The natural brickearth was sealed by a thick layer of blue-grey clay, interpreted as estuarine deposits. This layer formed a near vertical edge in the south-west corner of the site. To the west of this edge was a layer of weathered brickearth. This produced worked and burnt flint, possibly of late Bronze Age or Iron Age date. It is possible that the clay represented the filling of a river channel which had cut into the brickearth. The interface between the two layers was stained, which might indicate a timber revetment. {italon}Sec(abr)(4c){italoff} {italon}SMR Primary Record Numbers:{italoff} SOU 500 (Southampton City Council, Heritage Management investigation identification no) |
