Abstract: |
The 40m wide survey corridor followed the proposed line of a new section of the A5 trunk road to the south of Tamworth. The accessible portions of this survey corridor were investigated by scanning with subsequent detailed gradiometer survey undertaken in eight areas (Areas A-H). This survey formed part of a wider investigation by Birmingham University Field Archaeology Unit. Scanning noted a generally quiet level of background magnetic response, which varied slightly with geology/pedology. However, few anomalies of interest were found. Detailed survey recorded a small number of linear and pit-type anomalies, however, these were weak and poorly defined. Whilst those in Area 2 may have been part of a former enclosure or field system, most were isolated and their interpretation was cautious. Other responses, attributed to natural causes, ploughing and field drains, were also recorded. [Au(abr)] |
