Abstract:
The proposed development site lay within the historic Late Saxon and medieval city of Norwich, whose origins lie in the Middle Saxon period, but which became truly urban in the 9th century. The Bus Station site was in a peripheral situation within the area of the medieval town, just inside the early 14th-century walled circuit, although Surrey Street to the east and St. Stephen's Street to the north of the site were built up by 1300. The Bus Station site was situated behind the street frontages, to the rear of tenements on those streets, but reached the street frontage on All Saints' Green. Records and maps showed that much of the site lay within an area of town fields and pasture until the building of the town walls, when it became gardens and orchards which it was to remain until modern times.
