Abstract: |
Survey was carried out within the confines of the ramparts of Beaudesert Castle. The castle was located on a natural promontory, known as The Mount, that overlooked the town from the east. The Mount was still augmented by a series of earthworks, which represented the remains of Beaudesert Castle. The caste was over 280m long and approximately 90m wide, its axis running southwest-northeast. The northeast end was occupied by an oval, flat-topped and ditched artificial mound (Area 1) which was considered to represent the motte of the castle. This was separated from the rest of the hilltop by a ditch and a causeway. The rest of the site was occupied by two further enclosures (Areas 2 and 3) divided from each other by a V-shaped ditch. They were believed to represent the courtyards of a double bailey arrangement. The aim of the survey was to confirm the elements of the layout of the medieval castle as suggested by the surviving earthworks. In particular it was hoped that geophysical survey would help establish whether stone buildings were present on the motte. The work formed part of a wider archaeological investigation being undertaken as part of the Time Team series. The geophysical survey produced mixed results. In Area 1 (the Motte), the resistance survey helped confirm and identify the existence of stone buildings, though, due to extensive robbing, it was not possible to obtain an accurate ground plan. In Areas 2 and 3 (the Bailey), the results were severely affected by the bedrock, which in places lay immediately below the turf. In such circumstances it was impossible to distinguish between archaeological and natural responses unless there was a clear shape and form in the data. In this instance there was not. The magnetic survey may have identified the location of two former Victorian bonfire sites. [Au(abr)] |
