Abstract: |
The excavation and monitoring of pipe trenches both within and outside the scheduled area of Campsea Ash Priory recovered evidence for extensive preservation at shallow depth of substantial walls and other deposits associated with the priory. The east cloister wall was found to be considerably deeper and thicker than had been thought and seemed to comprise two separate phases, suggesting an earlier building on the site. The remains of a shallow lain 0.15 metre wide flint and mortar wall was also recorded east of and on the same alignment to the north-south oriented east cloister wall. This was interpreted as possibly representing the edge or base of a walkway or path external to the eastern cloister range. A buttress associated with the south cloister wall was also revealed. Further priory deposits were recorded in the trench excavated by the contractors on the east side of the scheduled area in the same trench seemed to be on the same alignment as the north-south oriented east cloister wall.
