Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in response to a planning condition prior to development. The site lay within an Area of High Archaeological Priority and the lack of recorded archaeological features and finds was not necessarily an indication that the site was barren of archaeology. It was clear from documentary, cartographic and archaeological sources that the area of the site was surrounded by human activity from prehistoric times onwards, and may have been directly influenced by such activity. Although there was no conclusive evidence of human occupation on the eastern side of the site, where the present town was located, the close proximity of the subject site to the river did raise the possibility of prehistoric activity having occurred in the near vicinity. As the site was situated back from the river, there was less potential for buildings and the area was probably more likely to have contained gardens or fields. [Au(abr)] |
