Abstract: |
Monitoring was carried out during the excavation of post-holes for a new fence, which ran along the western edge of the site of Hempton Priory, a SAM. The priory had originally been founded as a hospital in the early 12th century. Substantial lengths of the western precinct wall had been observed during previous works; the new fence was to be constructed slightly to the east of the line of this wall. During the watching brief, large flints were observed within 14 of the 140 post-holes excavated. These were similar in size to those of the surviving parts of the precinct wall. No wall foundations or other archaeological features were seen. It was concluded that the main ranges of the priory buildings must have lain in the central northern part of the south field and in the north field, on the site of Abbey farm, as suspected from surviving earthwork and stone remains.
