Abstract:
The evaluation, consisting of the excavation of two trial trenches, was undertaken in response to a condition upon planning permission for an extension to the hospital. Despite terracing for the Victorian house and later hospital buildings, archaeological features cut into the subsoil had survived. A ditch in trench 1 could be dated to the 11th or 12th century from the evidence of the pottery recovered from the fill. A ditch in trench 2 had very similar dimensions to that in trench 1. It was unlikely that they were part of the same ditch, but they may have been associated. No dating evidence was obtained from this ditch. A stone-lined drain excavated in trench 2 may have been associated with the late 19th century 'Croft' or the earliest hospital building. The finds from the fill of the construction cut of the drain dated from the 18th century or later, and the small amount of silt in the base indicated that it was a relatively recent feature in use for a comparatively short time.
