Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed route of a water pipeline identified that the route crossed the supposed line of Roman Ermine Street. No other known sites were directly affected by the proposals, but a number of Listed Buildings, Areas of Archaeological Significance and other sites of interest lay in the surrounding area. Remains included two Scheduled Ancient Monuments, comprising an undated mound (SAM 10940) and a possible medieval manorial site (SAM 11560), cropmarks, Roman artefacts, barrows and other features of Romano-British date, and post-medieval structures, including two ice houses and an obelisk. A magnetometer survey identified the sites of three possible ditches and two metal objects. It was recommended that the possible features should be sampled, and that topsoil stripping for the pipeline should be monitored. [AIP] |
