Abstract: |
A desk-top assessment of the proposed site of a residential development was undertaken. Bronze Age and medieval artefacts had been retrieved from the nearby River Kennet, and a probable 10th century spearhead had been found. Excavations had recorded evidence of riverside activity dating from the 10th century onwards, including water frontages, wharves and culverting. Several mills had lain in the area. Environmental trial pits and boreholes had indicated the presence of alluvial deposits on the site, which was crossed by a stream. It was concluded that archaeological investigation of parts of the site would probably be necessary. [AIP] |
