Abstract: |
Very little archaeological work had taken place within the town of Colyton. A few prehistoric finds were recorded within the town itself, but there was no clear evidence for Roman occupation. Despite the presence of a large amount of documentary material for Colyton Parish, very little was known about the church mentioned in the Domesday Book. Although its location was uncertain, it was likely that it stood on or near the site of the present church. The Church of St Andrew may have originated as a pre-Conquest minster church, established on a Royal Saxon estate and serving a wide area. [Au(abr)] |
