Abstract:
The excavation confirmed the presence of medieval remains dating from the 13th and 14th century. It appeared that the site contained evidence for a building, probably a barn or similar structure relating to arable cultivation, as well as an enclosure that may have been evidence of animal management. Although no domestic structures were recorded, a number of rubbish pits suggested that occupation was present nearby, reinforcing the picture of a small farmstead exploiting the surrounding countryside. Activity on the site appeared to have declined during the 14th century, although some evidence for activity in the early post-medieval period was present in the form of pits and a ditch. The site appeared to have been terraced in the 18th century for the creation of orchards for cider production, and this caused some truncation to the archaeological resource. [Au(abr)]
