Abstract: |
A watching brief was conducted during ground disturbing works associated with the renovation of the garden and to try and establish if any original features of the Georgian garden survived below the modern garden. After the initial demolition of the modern garden, a WWII Covered Trench Shelter was uncovered. Unfortunately no garden features were uncovered, however, medieval and later contemporary pottery of the same period as the garden was located at a low level. The work provided evidence that concluded the original level of the 18th century garden did not survive and building insertions within the central garden area and by Cross Street removed crucial evidence of the early garden foundations.
