Abstract: |
Fieldwalking was carried out at a proposed landfill site where an earlier evaluation in 1992 had identified a number of areas of archaeological significance. A total area of 8.1ha was subject to surface artefact collection. 233 sherds of post-medieval and modern pottery typical of manuring and casual rubbish disposal were collected, and an illegible post-medieval coin was found. An assemblage comprising 480 worked flints of Late Neolithic/Bronze Age date was also recovered. No definitively Mesolithic artefacts were observed, although some of the material may have been of Mesolithic or Early Neolithic date. The identification of a discrete surface scatter in the south of the site in the Phase 1 area in 1992 was confirmed, although its likely date was Neolithic/Bronze Age rather than Mesolithic. However, the presence of a discrete surface scatter in Phase 4 could not be supported by the findings of the fieldwalking exercise. [Au(abr)] |
