Abstract:
An archaeological impact assessment was undertaken of the Grade II Listed Building known as Cross Corners. Though originally a separate village, Belgrave was gradually absorbed into the expanding settlement of Leicester during the final quarter of the 19th century and early years of the 20th century. The house, which was built during the early 18th century as a private residence, had a cross-wing added at its east end during either the closing decades of the 18th or early decades of the 19th century. This section was substantially rebuilt during the final quarter of the 19th century. Cross Corners was acquired by the City of Leicester Museums Service in the 1950s and for many years served as the headquarters of the Schools Loan Service Department. In more recent times it had functioned as a museum annexe and store. A recent review of local authority properties identified Cross Corners as a suitable property for conversion into use as an Arts Centre for a group of primary schools located in the north-west area of Leicester. This assessment examined the initial proposals associated with this conversion and assessed their impact on the historic fabric of the Listed Building. [Au(abr)]
