Abstract: |
An exploratory excavation was carried out within a cave where human skeletal remains and footprints had been discovered in 1996. Part of a skull retrieved during an initial exploration was radiocarbon dated to the Middle Bronze Age. The subsequent excavation aimed to record and plan the contents of the cave and to obtain further samples for dating, whilst causing minimal disturbance to the cave deposits. The human remains were those of at least three individuals, these being an adult male, an adult female and a juvenile, and were likely to have originally been deposited in the cave as intact bodies rather than as disarticulated remains. Two clear bare footprints were recorded which were likely to have been made by different individuals. A number of other depressions which could also have been the remains of footprints were noted, but positive identification was not possible. A variety of faunal remains were found in the cave, with represented species including red deer, roe deer, wolf, sheep, cattle, pig and possible domestic dog. Much of the faunal accumulation could be interpreted most plausibly as resulting from wolf denning activity. The use of the cave by wolves probably pre-dated its use for human burial. [AIP] |
