Abstract: |
<summary>Prior to construction of a roundabout and associated [?bund] at the eastern end of the proposed Kettering Northern By-Pass, topographic and magnetometer surveys were undertaken. Former quarries, a group of three terraces, a flat, low ridge interpreted as a trackway, and the remains of ridge and furrow cultivation were recorded. Evidence of brick-making was discovered, in the form of a low mound marking the site of a former brick-kiln and in a flattened area which possibly formed a preparation, drying and stacking yard. In a separate excavation by Anglian Water Ltd, a trackway for access to kilns dating from sometime in the late 18th/early 19th century was discovered. The magnetometer survey revealed more than one kiln, with much waste material scattered nearby. Metalling beneath the raised trackway was also recognised, and its continuation into the possible yard indicated. A separate stack-yard close to the main road was discovered. {italon}AIP{italoff}{spacea} |
