Abstract: |
An evaluation in advance of redevelopment of the Westgate Centre and associated car parks revealed a number of archaeological features. Alluvial deposits had been cut by channels, with some containing evidence for timber revetment, of a medieval or post-medieval date. Other features were alongside these, and were tentatively interpreted as quarrying evidence. Two parallel features overlain by a potential north-south aligned stone surface were thought to represent a post-medieval ford across the Trill Mill Stream. Other evidence for a possible building platform for the 13th century construction of the Franciscan Greyfriars friary was also recorded. Robbed walls and evidence for post-medieval dissolution activity was encountered, and after this period it appeared that the site was used for gardens or pasture until the construction of Victorian terraces, demolished in the 1960s.
