Abstract: |
Seven archaeological assessment surveys were undertaken of mine shaft sites located within the Caradon Moorland Countryside Area, prior to site investigations and shaft treatment being carried out under the Derelict Land Grant Scheme (DLG), operated by English Partnerships. The sites studied were Phoenix United (Prince of Wales Shaft), South Phoenix (Prosper Shaft), South Caradon (Jopes Shaft), East Caradon (William's Shaft), Phoenix Mine (Track to Cheesewring Quarry), South Phoenix (Parson's or Incline Shaft) and Marke Valley (Salisbury Shaft). Several of the above sites were located within areas under consideration for Scheduling as part of the Industrial Monuments Protection Programme, and three engine houses situated near shafts were Listed (Grade II). Consultation and negotiation with the relevant organisations and bodies was recommended, prior to shaft treatment work. [AIP] |
